COURSE NARRATIVE:
I took this course in Fall 2019 and it falls under the MLO2: Linguistics, I came into this course without much experience in what linguistics in the real world meant. This course integrated a vast variety of articles and reading of a number of professionals in the Linguistics field. Discussions in class were incredibly riveting since we were able to discuss the readings and include our own personal experiences with the acquisition of the Spanish language and compare it to the authors' material. I believe the course's structure allowed discussions to be a great tool for students to go beyond simple understanding of the material and the topics.
One of the most challenging tasks we were given in this course was to teach one of our readings to the class. Although the idea seemed daunting, with the help of our professor, I was able to successfully teach my peers about Maria Anton's A Language in Focus, which dealt with a review of research done about the acquisition of the Spanish Language as a second language. This activity gave me the challenge to teach a topic that I had previously been completely unfamiliar with, to go beyond my own personal understanding to reach a level where I was able to teach this matter to my classmates. I have included the presentation I utilized as part of my presentation, within it are is the activity I used to help make the class more familiar with the reading and also a lot of the points that we discussed during the class. I believe that this class was uniquely challenging but accessible to students like myself, that were unfamiliar with linguistics in a real-world approach. One of final assignments we were given was to create a Teaching Philosophy (that I have also included) so that we would have a starting point to create a Teaching Philosophy we could present to future employers, for when we actually get out into the teaching field. By completing this class, I am able to see the aspects that are incorporated into the teaching of Spanish as a second language, while also having gained knowledge thanks to the shared experiences of my fellow classmates.
