Statement of Purpose
I chose to study Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures as my major so that I would be able to connect with my and my family's culture. Having completed most of my education in English, I found myself losing my mother language and through the initial courses in Hartnell Community College I found a missing portion of myself and my identity through the Spanish courses they offered. Once I transferred to California State University at Monterey Bay (CSUMB) I was able to further develop this language connection. Through being a part of the Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures department I was able to forage strong connections with a wide variety of educators and classmates, all coming from different pathways of life. These people have served as a great inspiration to strive for excellence in completing my bachelor's degree. Through the courses I have undertaken at CSUMB I have learned about the cultural history of hispanic speaking nations, I have learned of the suffering and achievements of the Spanish speaking immigrants (and later generations). in the United States. For the first time, I have been able to understand my own language development and broaden my cultural education. Once completing my education here at CSUMB I plan to further my education, with a master's degree and look further into becoming a teacher to allow for people to explore the world of bilingualism in earlier education to encourage acceptance of different cultures and the value of language to community. |
