Major Learning Outcome 1: Language Proficiency
One of the main tasks this Major Learning Outcome is concerned about is communication. Being able to communicate successfully in a range of environments includes a professional level of Spanish that had to be developed through time and efforts to deliberately utilize more descriptive and a wider range of vocabulary. Prior to coming to CSUMB, I already had years of experience with speaking Spanish as it is one of the languages I learned as a child. As such, I felt fairly confident with my ability. Unlike others who may have felt wary with communicating in Spanish, I considered my pronunciation and speed at speaking to be in a fairly good standing. Nevertheless, once I entered these higher academic courses I realized that I still had much to learn when it came to the more professional terminology and environment.
Although many of the courses that I took as a member of the Spanish Language and Hispanic Cultures major helped improve my ability to speak Spanish, I find that course SPAN301: Composition and Oral Practice was essential to my improvement in oral communication. This course viewed an elevated level of word choice, as essential to assignments and even during oral discussions and presentations in class. Our professor insisted on the implementation of our best vocabulary as we discussed tasks in class to encourage the progressive inclusion of this advanced vocabulary within our personal vocabulary we used on a daily basis. Another course that that offered much aid to my improvement in communication was SPAN304: Intro to Hispanic Literature. This course was taken in the first semester at CSUMB, Fall 2018. Through the variety of works, through poetry and short stories, we made our way through a variety of literature movements. Through reading these various texts we were able to push ourselves to learn the meanings of words we did not know. As we wrote essays and included the new vocabulary we gained, we began to include these words when we discussed in class, and with my peers. The combined efforts made in literature and composition based classes and the deliberate inclusion of discussions and oral presentations, I was able to improve my Spanish and elevate my ability with the language not only with vocabulary but with the techniques as to better work my way through various professional settings.
In another two courses, WLC300: Major ProSeminar and WLC400: Major Capstone, we were able to see the progress we made with our language proficiency. Since the course were taken with at least a year apart we were able to test ourselves to see how much we had improved in our Spanish abilities. We were able to complete this through the STAMP test, that delves into the different levels of ability in oral communication, written communication, and comprehension of different mediums (text and audio).
