COURSE NARRATIVE:
This is one of my most favorite courses I have taken. I learned such an astounding amount of information while also having fun at the same time. This course used a mix of discussion and lecture to keep us engaged, while also managing to make our way through the entirety of the textbook we had for this course, something I will always consider an impressive feat in such a short amount of time. In this course, we learned of the culture, geography, and the changing society of Spain from the prehistoric times to the present. Some of the most challenging (but frankly quite funny) aspects of this course was not mixing up all the kings since there were several Carlos and Felipes, most one right after the other that made sleeping their feats and characteristics separate in order often having to resort to little patterns and jokes to remember. Other aspects were trying to understand the cultural impacts that were had in the country with the number of invasions and migrations that occurred, finally resulting in the merging of two kingdoms that resulted in the most similar state of the country of Spain as we know it today.
Throughout this course, and even while learning of the prehistoric presence in Spain, we maintained a steady eye on the current affairs, scandals, and braking news that was being produced from Spain. This short assignment we then shared with our class groups, the most interesting ones then to the whole class. This was all in an effort to remember that the history of Spain is actually a very current matter, and the subject of the culture and civilization is not limited to the old times of conquests and voyages. Towards the end of this course we were also tasked with making a short and interesting type of image-only presentation on a chosen topic towards the end of the semester, my partner and I presented on the dictatorship of Spain by Francisco Franco.
